How to Dispute an Instacart Charge

Instacart disputes usually involve missing or substituted items, a total that is higher than the estimate, or a delivery that never arrived. The app has a built-in way to handle most of them.

Whether you're calling it a refund request, a chargeback, disputing the charge, or just contesting it, the steps below are the same.

Step 1

Open the order and read the final receipt

Compare the receipt to your cart. Weighted items, substitutions, tips, and service fees can all change the final total, and some are adjustable.

Step 2

Report the problem in the app for that order

Use the order's Help or Report an issue option and choose the matching problem, such as missing items, wrong items, or damaged goods. This is usually the fastest route to a credit or refund.

Step 3

Describe it clearly if you need to follow up

State the order number, the item or amount in question, and what you want: a refund, a credit, or a corrected charge. Include photos of anything damaged or wrong.

Step 4

Dispute with your card issuer if support does not resolve it

Bring the order details, your written explanation, and what Instacart said when you contacted them.

Tips that help
  • •Report issues soon after delivery. Support is more willing to credit missing items quickly than weeks later.
  • •A photo of what arrived next to the receipt makes wrong or missing item reports much stronger.
  • •A temporary pending hold that is larger than the final total usually drops off within a few days. Check that before treating it as an error.
