How to Dispute a Gym Membership Charge

Gym charges are one of the most common disputes, usually because a membership kept billing after you tried to cancel or because the cancellation process was harder than the signup. Here is how to deal with it.

Whether you're calling it a refund request, a chargeback, disputing the charge, or just contesting it, the steps below are the same.

Step 1

Find your membership agreement

Look for the cancellation terms. Many gyms require a specific method such as in person, in writing, or by certified mail, and whether you followed it often decides how the dispute goes.

Step 2

Cancel the right way, and get proof

If you are still enrolled, cancel using the method the contract requires and ask for written confirmation with an effective date. Keep any receipt, email, or mailing proof.

Step 3

Request a refund for charges after your cancellation date

Write to the gym or the corporate office with your member ID, the date you canceled, the charges you are disputing, and the refund you want. Be specific about dates and amounts.

Step 4

Dispute with your card issuer or bank if needed

Bring the cancellation proof, the charge dates, and your written request. If the gym bills by direct debit from your bank account, contact your bank as well and ask about stopping future payments.

Tips that help
  • •Check for annual fees and rate increases in the contract. These are common reasons for charges that look unexpected.
  • •If you moved or have a medical reason to cancel, many contracts allow it with documentation, so ask for the specific policy.
  • •Keep a dated record of every call and visit. Gym disputes often turn on what was said at the front desk.
