How to Dispute a Car Rental Charge (Hertz, Enterprise, Turo, and Others)

Car rental disputes usually involve a damage claim you disagree with, fuel or toll charges, extra fees at the counter, or a deposit that was never returned. Here is how to handle it.

Whether you're calling it a refund request, a chargeback, disputing the charge, or just contesting it, the steps below are the same.

Step 1

Get the full itemized charges

Ask the company for an itemized final invoice. Rental receipts often bundle fuel, tolls, admin fees, and damage into one amount.

Step 2

Gather your condition evidence

Check your pickup and return photos, the inspection form, and any time-stamped receipts. Photos from when you picked up the car are the strongest proof in a damage dispute.

Step 3

Dispute in writing with specifics

State the reservation number, the amount, what you disagree with, and what you are requesting. For damage claims, ask for the repair estimate and photos the company is relying on.

Step 4

Use your card or insurer if the company will not budge

Many credit cards include rental car coverage, so check whether yours applies. You can also dispute the charge with your card issuer using your written request and the evidence you collected.

Tips that help
  • •Take a short video of the whole car, inside and out, at pickup and again at return. It takes two minutes and settles most damage disputes.
  • •Toll charges often come with an administrative fee on top. Ask whether that fee is in your agreement.
  • •A returned-without-inspection car is a common source of later damage claims, so ask for a signed return receipt.
