How to Get a Refund for an App Store or Google Play Charge

Charges from the App Store or Google Play usually come from an in-app purchase, a subscription you forgot, or a purchase made by a child. Both stores have a request process, and you often do not need your bank.

Whether you're calling it a refund request, a chargeback, disputing the charge, or just contesting it, the steps below are the same.

Step 1

Find the charge in your purchase history

On Apple, check your purchase history under your account settings or on the report a problem site. On Google, check your order history in Google Play. This shows which app or subscription the charge came from.

Step 2

Cancel the subscription if it is still active

Manage subscriptions in your device or store account settings and cancel it, so there are no further charges.

Step 3

Request a refund through the store

Apple and Google each have a refund request option for purchases. Choose the reason that fits, such as accidental purchase or a subscription you did not intend to renew, and add a short factual explanation.

Step 4

Dispute with your card issuer as a last resort

If the store declines your request and you believe the charge is wrong, your card issuer can review it with your written account and the store's response.

Tips that help
  • •Act promptly. Refund requests are generally easier to get soon after the purchase.
  • •Check Family Sharing or purchase approval settings if a child made the purchase, and turn on requiring approval going forward.
  • •A charge listed under the app store's name rather than the app's can be confusing, so match the date and amount to your purchase history.
